The mysterious Postojna Cave world is the part of Slovenia which has been carved, shaped and created by water; deep within these world-famous caves hide the most precious beauty created through millions of years, drop by drop, year after year... The
20-kilometre-long underworld system is a miracle in itself, but one becomes
truly astounded at the look of the mysterious "human fish"
(Proteus Anguinus), wondering at the strange form of life preserved in the
underground kingdom. Another mystery of the underground ... The cave is accessible without special equipment, and has a constant temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. Visitors are taken for a tour by a special cave train, accompanied by experienced guides. A visit takes an hour and a half. |

The giant Concert Hall can hold up to 10,000 visitors. From time to time concerts are given here by world-famous maestros; Pietro Mascagni and the great Enrico Caruso are among the performers who have appeared here in the past. These days the hall host concerts by various ensembles, including philharmonic orchestras and the famous Slovenian Octet. The
acoustics are marvellous and the visible and invisible spaces send back so
many echoes in so many different ways that they render the music
infinitely voluminous, alternately mystical, passionately roaring, and
solemn; completely unsuitable for recording, but for listening, almost
ritually religious. Because of its monumental dimensions the hall is one
of the most important chambers in Postojna Cave. |

The diamond, which is so beautiful that the cave administration chose it for its symbol, radiates purely and eternally, not distinguishing night from day, or seasons from years and centuries. The temperature is also constant as well. Only when there are heavy and lengthy rains outside, some of the nervousness dribbles in here, while the metronome of time sounds in a more vivacious way and the dampness increases |

Below the castle, which perches in the cliff like a swallow’s nest, is the entrance to what used to be the stables. Animals could not in fact enter the castle by the normal route; from these stables today’s visitor can get something of a taste of the significance of this eyrie, half castle, half cave. Without
an experienced guide equipped with a lantern one would almost certainly
lose one’s way in the labyrinth of passages, tunnels, galleries, steps,
shafts and rocky slopes. When daylight once again begins to gleam at the
end of Erazem’s gallery, a few minutes’ walk brings you to a
marvellous view of Postojna and its surrounding hills. It is almost
impossible to believe that the lower, hidden level of this world is so
beautiful and so rich. |
