Stanjel is a picturesque Karsts settlement, which is disposed in terraces towards the 363 m high hill Turn. The features of the Stanjel are narrow streets with houses built from a stone bricks. Characteristics of houses are stonecutting products as stone made gutter, stone portals, dwells...
The settlement expanded over the hill in the Middle Ages. The settlement was enclosed by defence walls in a late 15th century. Fortified settlement protected the inhabitants against Turks invasion in that time. The church of St. Daniel and the renaissance-baroque castle dominate over the present image. Popular sightseeing of the fortified settlement is also the Ferrari garden which was projected by famous architect Maks Fabiani.
