ACTIVITIES OF THE SPORTS FEDERATION FOR THE DISABLED OF SLOVENIA

The Sports Federation for the Disabled of Slovenia (SFDS) is a special national organisation for the disabled. It was established in 1950 based on the activities of the Sports Commission of the Disabled War Veteran Association of Slovenia (ZVVI). Since then the Federation's programme has been altered many times and today it focuses on competitive and top quality sports for Slovenia's disabled people. The Federation was founded by the national disabled associations that play an extremely important role in familiarising the disabled with the possibilities and the positive effects of participation in sporting activities.

As a part of its programme the SFDS organises approximately thirty National Championships every year with about 1,000 participants. Each year some 60 to 110 disabled people of all disabled groups attend official international competitions for the disabled (European and World Championships, World Games, Paralympic Games) in different sports. Educating the disabled about sports for the disabled, publishing and development of quality personnel are important parts of the Federation's programme.

LINKS WITH INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS

SFDS is a member of 15 different organisations for sports for the disabled. The most important among them is the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) that is also responsible for the preparation of the Paralympic Games.

REPRESENTING SPORTS FOR THE DISABLED IN SLOVENIA

As the main organisation for the sports for the disabled in Slovenia, the SFDS represents sports of all the disabled in sport, expert and other institutions. The SFDS is a member of the Olympic Committee of Slovenia and also represents the disabled in dealing with current and long-term issues within the Ministry of Education and Sport and in other national institutions.

FINANCING

SFDS activities and its programmes are mostly financed from the resources of the Foundation for the Financing of Disabled and Humanitarian Organisations drawn from lottery funds and partially from the national budget of the Republic of Slovenia.

A large effort has been made recently to attract sponsors for these activities for disabled people.

In order to obtain donations, the SFDS formed the Paralympic Fund this year, co-founded by Miro Cerar, Brigita Bukovec, Janez Čadež, Miloš Kovačič and Mitja Meršol.
