10. maja 2002 pa se je v življenjski zgodbi Merlene Ottey zgodila pomembna sprememba - tako zanjo kot za Slovenijo. Merlene se je izpolnila nekajletna želja, da bi nastopila tudi za svojo novo domovino. Na njen rojstni dan ji je bilo podeljeno državljanstvo Republike Slovenije, vendar ji poškodbe niso dovoljevale, da bi nastopila že na prvem državnem prvenstvu. Njena prva uradna tekma, na kateri je v disciplini 60 m nastopila za Slovenijo, je bila tako šele leta 2003 na dvoranskem evropskem prvenstvu v Birminghamu. Edvard Bogataj |
